Why do people - presumably business people on the run - click play, why do they want to engage with the video?

One thing that our video does is it it introduces to people and places that they don’t have access to. One of the great things about being a journalist at a strong news organization is that you have access to people. We have 2,000 reporters and editors around the world in places like Egypt and Chicago and Hong Kong.

I think what prompts readers to actually click play on the video is the promise that they are going to learn something from these reporters who are covering the story, or they are going to see a person or a place that they wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

- Kevin Delaney, Managing Editor of the WSJ.com

Next week, CBSNews.com will debut a new show called “What’s Trending” that bridges a live, weekly webcast with social media interaction. “What’s Trending fills the gap as a broadcast show for the internet generation,” explains host and executive producer Shira Lazar. “It’s not just a show with a social strategy added on to it — it’s powered by the community and social media.”

This underscores the fact that when you run a news company, you’ve got to run a multi-media company.

Game for history?

OK, I’ve never been a big fan of history at all. Never. Ask my friends from Fairfield.

I chose to take Geography over history. So it’s kind of an irony that I’ve gotta work on a project that delves into the history of Oklahoma and try and make it contemporary. I wonder how I can get people like me interested in those stories that we do for Stories of The Ages? That question popped up and has stuck to my head after I had a chat with the SEO specialist at NewsOK, someone who’s been a huge inspiration. I had suggested that individual story presentations should each be search-engine optimized since there has been literally no web traffic coming in from search engines to these pages.

He agreed with me, but asked a more fundamental question:

How do you generate that interest that would make them want to search for it in the first place?

I don’t have an answer for that, but on the top of mind comes promotion via social media platforms.

And perhaps creating a quiz, or a game like method of story telling might actually garner the hits. Am wondering if that can be done for my stories on Ghost Towns? Plot the towns on a map and do a Super Mario like thing? Would require a ton of resources, but might be a shot if graphics is capable of it?
